Major Poker Platform Expands to Alberta Market

A major international poker platform has become the latest operator to receive approval from Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), marking an expansion into the western Canadian province. The licensing approval came in mid-August, bringing Alberta's total number of regulated iGaming platforms to 39.

The operator, owned by an international iGaming company, is already established in Canada's largest iGaming market. Since September 2022, the platform has been licensed and operating in Ontario's regulated sector, giving it demonstrated experience navigating Canadian provincial regulations and player protections.

Cross-Province Expansion Strategy

The move into Alberta signals the operator's broader ambitions within Canada's fragmented iGaming landscape. While operators face the challenge of managing separate licensing regimes across provinces, there is industry interest in shared liquidity arrangements that could pool players and game volume across multiple jurisdictions. Such arrangements could benefit players through larger prize pools and more robust player liquidity, though regulatory complexities remain significant.

Alberta's iGaming market has been growing steadily since the province launched its regulated online casino framework.
